Science experiment: how germs spread
Duration: 15-20 minutes
What do I need?
- Glitter
- Bucket of water
- Sheet of white paper
What to do:
- Explain to your child that he/she will be doing an experiment to see how germs stick onto our hands
- *Parent to assist with getting child’s hands damp using some water (Hands should not be soaking wet)
- *Parent then sprinkles a healthy amount of glitter onto child’s hands
- Ask your child to rub his/her palms together
- *Parents are to explain to your child that the glitter represents germs and that their hands are now covered in germs.
- Next have your child place his/her palms onto a A4 paper and observe how many germs (glitter) are left behind when they remove their hands
- Parent then ask your child to wash his/her hands in the bucket of water without using soap. Now ask your child what he/she has learnt about washing with water alone.
- Then have your child wash his/her hands again by using soap and water. Your child will learn that by washing with soap and water, all of the germs comes easily off
- At the end of activity, talk about how easy germs can be spread from person to person
*Performing experiments with preschoolers has the following benefits:
- Encouraging discussion: Talking about what you see, feel, taste, hear, smell and discover.
- Observing changes: Children have the opportunity to develop their observational skills and identify changes and differences
- Using our five senses: For example, smelling or touching and tactile discrimination.
