Activity 1
Play dough activity
Duration: 5- 10 minutes
What do we need?
- Play dough
- *Pre-drawn face templates on paper(Caregiver to draw: a circular head consisting of hair and ears)
What to do:
- *Caregiver is to roll play dough out and demonstrate breaking or cutting off pieces of it using the plastic knife.
- These pieces are then added to the empty paper face templates to firstly form facial features and then expressions. You may experiment by forming the different expressions your faces too before building it.
- Have your child do this on his/her own and discuss the facial expressions/emotions formed.
- Allow for free play with the dough too!
Activity 2
Toy sorting
Duration: 10 – 15 minutes
What do we need?
- An assortment of different colour toys
- Construction paper( different colours matching toys)
- Masking tape
What to do:
- *Caregiver is to secure sheets of colour paper onto floor/carpet area with tape as shown
- Show your child how to sort toys by matching with colour sheets.
- Name or have your child name colours as he/she matches.
- Upgrade the activity by asking “what can you think of that’s red?”
“What in this room is yellow?”
“Can you think of foods we eat that are green?”
- Praise all efforts
By doing these types of activities: Your child is analysing data, making decisions, and comparing attributes to determine similarities and differences. Even in something as simple as toy sorting, toddlers are engaged in deep in learning.
Activity 3
Pompom Hockey
Duration 5 – 10 minutes
What do we need?
- Pompoms or cotton wool balls
- Masking tape
- 2 Paper plates
- 2 Cardboard tubes
To make the scoops just cut the paper plate with 3 straight edges and stick it onto the end of the cardboard tube with masking tape.
What to do:
- *Caregiver is to make the scoop as guided above as well as form shape boxes on the floor using the masking tape (as show), as the goals for the pompoms or cotton wool balls.
- The challenge of Pompom Hockey is to get as many pompoms into your square! The rules of the game are to not use your hands, that only the scoop can be used to move the e pompoms around the floor and into the squares.
