Activity 1

Creative Art Activity: Citrus Painting 

Duration: 15- 20 minutes 

What do I need?

  • Paint 
  • A4 paper 
  • Citrus fruit 

What must I do?

  1. *Caregiver is to cut the citrus fruit in half 
  2. Have your child simply dip the two halves in any color paint and proceed to stamp the print of the fruit halves onto the paper. This artwork can serve as some awesome wrapping paper! 

Activity 2

Mathematics: Exploring Measurement  

Duration: 15-20 minutes                                                             

What do I need?

  • Sand in a bucket
  • 10 Foam Cups 
  • 10 Plastic or metal spoons 
  • Marker (non-permanent)

What must I do?

  1. Caregiver is to write the number symbols from 1-10 on the foam cups as well as on the  spoons 
  2. When done, your child places each foam cup next to the corresponding spoon 
  3. Next, instruct your child to scoop the correct amount of sand in each cup according the number symbols (for example the child will only scoop one spoon of sand and place it in the number one foam cup etc.)
  4. Caregiver then questions the child around their reasoning about why the cups are not all equally filled. You may also mix up the order of the foam cups with sand and ask your child to place in order from either least full to fullest and then again in order from fullest to least full.

*It is important to introduce the concept of capacity to your child at an early age. Water and sand are the easiest to use as fillers. Provide your child with a variety of different container sizes and shapes to assist them while exploring. 

Activity 3

Dancing Rice experiment 

Duration: 15-20 minutes

What do I need?

  • White Vinegar 
  • Baking Soda 
  • Instant Rice 
  • Clear Jar/ Glass
  • Water 
  • Food coloring 

What to do: (*Parents/Caregivers to assist)

  1. Assist your child with filling a clear jar ¾ full of water and mix food coloring with it 
  2. Then have your child measure 1 teaspoon of baking soda; add it to the mixture and stir until it is completely mixed 
  3. Assist with measuring out ¼ cup of uncooked rice and have your child add it to the mixture
  4. Then measure out 1-2 teaspoons of white vinegar and add to the mixture as well.
  5. Waits and see what happens to the rice!
