Course 5

Activity 1

Social emotional development: Building feeling faces

Duration: 20-30 minutes

What do I need?

  • Play dough
  • *Pre-drawn face templates on paper (Caregiver to draw: a circular head consisting of hair and ears). *These may be placed into plastic sleeves so that play dough does not get stuck on it.
  • Plastic knife and scissors

(*Best Ever No-Cook Play Dough Recipe*)

You need:

Method:

  • Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
  • Add food colouring to the boiling water then into the dry ingredients
  • Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
  • Add the glycerine (optional)
  • Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. * This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!*
  • If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right

What to do:

  1. *Caregiver is to roll play dough out and demonstrate breaking or cutting off pieces of it using the plastic knife and scissors
  2. These pieces are then added to the empty paper face templates to firstly form facial features and then expressions. You may experiment by forming the different expressions your faces too before building it.
  3. Have your child do this on his/her own and discuss the facial expressions/emotions formed.
  4. Allow for free play with the dough and extra tools too!

*It is important to begin teaching your child about his emotions as early as possible since his feelings affect every choice he makes. Children who understand their emotions are less likely to act out by using temper tantrumsaggression, and defiance to express themselves.

Activity 2

Creative Art Activity: Citrus Painting

Duration: 15- 20 minutes

What do I need?

  • Paint
  • A4 paper
  • Citrus fruit

What must I do?

  1. *Caregiver is to cut the citrus fruit in half
  2. Have your child simply dip the two halves in any colour paint and proceed to stamp the print of the fruit halves onto the paper. This artwork can serve as some awesome wrapping paper!

Activity 3

Pompom Hockey

Duration: 5 – 10 minutes

What do we need?

  • Pompoms or cotton wool balls
  • Masking tape
  • 2 Paper plates
  • 2 Cardboard tubes

To make the scoops just cut the paper plate with 3 straight edges and stick it onto the end of the cardboard tube with masking tape.

What to do:

  1. *Caregiver is to make the scoop as guided above as well as form shape boxes on the floor using the masking tape (as show), as the goals for the pompoms or cotton wool balls.
  2. The challenge of Pompom Hockey is to get as many pompoms into your square!  The rules of the game are to not use your hands, that only the scoop can be used to move the pompoms around the floor and into the squares.

*Games give you the opportunity to teach your child about rules, about integrity and honesty, and about luck. Games also can help increase your child’s ability to focus his/her attention. Hint: (When you play games with your child, try to emphasize the fun of game as much as possible, rather than focusing on “who’s winning.”)
