Activity 1
Finger painting letter “A
Duration: 5 -10 minutes
What do you need?
- Letter A written on a sheet of newspaper
- paint
What to do:
- Give your child the newspaper with the letter A drawn on
- Let them first trace over it using a thick wax crayon
- Now they dip their finger in paint and paint over the letter
- Caregiver assist them to by showing to start at the top then move down to your left and then again from the top to the right and in the middle from left to right
- Remember to reference to the phonic sound “a” as in ant and not ay as in the alphabet song. This is to ensure that the correct phonic and visual association is made early on.
Activity 2
Visual: Look and find game
Duration 10-15 minutes for structured play. However, your child’s level of interest and engagement in water play will determine the duration
What do you need?
- Classroom related objects discussed throughout the week: examples- a book, blocks, toys, crayons, a puzzle etc. (at least 5 or more times)
What you need to do:
- *Caregiver to randomly place the above objects in various spaces of the house across a specific area (example: in bedroom and lounge), making sure that
- They are placed amongst other item to make it slightly more difficult to spot.
- Now walk with your child and ask: can you find… a packet of crayons etc.
- Make a big fuss when items are successfully found.
Activity 3
Mathematics: exploring measurements
Duration: 10-20 minutes
What do we need?
- Large container with water and a drop of food colouring
- A few cups of the same size (foam cups work well)
What to do:
- Have your child to use a cup to scoop water out of the container and pour it into another cup.
- Allow them to explore the following action concepts: scooping and pouring
- Now explore measurement concepts of: Empty, Full, Half full (caregiver to discuss concepts with your child and show and instruct him/her to fill according)
- Further, allow your child to play freely using his/her toys and other water play gadgets he/she wishes to play with.
