Activity 1
Creative art activity: Constructing a 3 dimensional pencil
Duration: 20 –30 minutes
What do you need?
- An empty kitchen towel roll
- Some yellow paint in a shallow dish
*Caregiver to prepare above, as well as the following ahead of time:
- Pre-drawn shapes on colour paper:-White or brown paper: a large circle; Black paper: a small circle; Pink paper: a circle (Parent to use the kitchen towel roll holder).
- Sponge or paint brush
- Glue
What to do:
- Firstly have your child sponge paint the kitchen towel roll yellow.
- Then allow it to dry by positioning it in a warm sunny area to dry
- Your child must then begin to cut out the various pre-drawn shapes out of the colour pages.
- Caregiver to provide support to learner to construct the finished pencil by positioning each shape and colour (as shown) using glue to support.
- Discuss the following spatial concepts with your child as he/she builds: top, on top of it/ above; bottom/ underneath, in front, at the back of/behind
Activity 2
Mathematics: Sorting according to colour names
Duration: 10-15 minutes
What do I need?
- Bottle tops / or even crayons (assorted colours: ( orange, red green, purple , blue, white and yellow)
- 7 White paper plates
- Marker
What to do
- Parent/ Caregiver is to write down colour names onto each paper plate using the marker (orange, red green, purple , blue, white and yellow )
- The child is then instructed to sort the different colour bottle tops and place them on the paper plate with the corresponding colour name on (as shown)
Activity 3
Story: The Three Little Pigs
Duration: 7-10 minutes
What do we need?
- Copy of the story for your child to either listen to or read along by use of a book/pictures
What to do?
- Tell your child the story/have him/her watch and listen to it via a book; pictures or visual-audio device
- Remember to have your child try and retell the story to you, with a special focus on the sequence of events.
- Ask him/her simple questions relating to the story afterwards.
- Have your child retell you the story and ask you questions afterwards.
