Activity 1

Creative Art Activity: Constructing a Toy Camera 

Duration: 20-30 mins

What to do I need?

  • Empty spice box (or any small box)
  • Empty toilet roll tube
  • Paint 
  • Glue 
  • String 
  • Sponge/Paint brush 

What to do: 

  1. *Parents are to trace the toilet rolls circle by placing it in the middle of the box for the camera lens.
  2. Your child cuts out the circle (*Parents to assist, if necessary)
  3. Then guide your child to cut off ¼ of the toilet roll and puts it in the hole by adding glue to it. Allow to dry.
  4. When its dry have your child paint the camera any colour of his/her choice.
  5. When paint has dried, your child decorate the toy camera further and attach the string. 

Activity 2

Language/Music: Sing along

Duration: 10-15 minutes

What to do: 

  1. Have your child watch the clip and listen to the words.
  2. Then encourage him/her to sing along as you sing along too. (Remember to use different tones and expressions while you sing)

** Nursery rhymes are often short and have a great deal of repetition. Repetition offers your growing child the opportunity to tune into words a second and third time and helps him remember what he has just heard. A rhyme’s repetition can also help your child become aware of the individual units of sound, known as phonemes, which make up words**

Activity 3

Story: The ant and the grasshopper story 

Duration of activity: 7-10 minutes

What do we need?

  • Copy of the story for your child to either listen to or read along by use of a book/pictures

What to do?

  1. Tell your child the story/have him/her watch and listen to it via a book; pictures or visual-audio device
  2. Remember to have your child try and retell the story to you
  3. Ask him/her simple questions relating to the story afterwards. 
  4. Have your child retell you the story and ask you questions afterwards.

The Grasshopper and the Ant

In a field one summer’s day, a grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content.  A group of ants walked by, grunting as they struggled to carry plump kernels of corn.

“Where are you going with those heavy things?” asked the grasshopper.

Without stopping, the first ant replied, “To our ant hill.  This is the third kernel I’ve delivered today.”

“Why not come and sing with me,” teased the grasshopper, “instead of working so hard?” 

“We are helping to store food for the winter,” said the ant, “and think you should do the same.”  

“Winter is far away and it is a glorious day to play,” sang the grasshopper.

But the ants went on their way and continued their hard work.

The weather soon turned cold.  All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick white blanket of snow that even the grasshopper could not dig through.  Soon the grasshopper found itself dying of hunger.

He staggered to the ants’ hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.  He begged them for something to eat.

“What!” cried the ants in surprise, “haven’t you stored anything away for the winter?  What in the world were you doing all last summer?” 

“I didn’t have time to store any food,” complained the grasshopper; “I was so busy playing music that before I knew it the summer was gone.” 

The ants shook their heads in disgust, turned their backs on the grasshopper and went on with their work.
