Activity 1

Colour sorting activity: Yellow     

Duration: 10-15 minutes

What to you need?

  • Basket with toys or any other colour objects that are safe to play with (ensure that there are yellow items in the basket too as this is the focus colour.)
  • Yellow page/blanket/bucket Basket with toys or object (focusing on yellow)
  • Yellow page/blanket/bucket

What to do:

  1. Hand your child the basket with toys/objects in.
  2. Caregiver is to explain that they need to find yellow objects or toys
  3. Talk to them about things that are yellow (example: The sun is yellow; a banana is also yellow)
  4. Next, take a short walk about in and around your home and have your child try and spot other yellow items. Praise all his/her correct responses.
  5. Once your child is done sorting, allow him/her to choose what they want to play with in the basket

Activity 2 

Blowing and crawling to the finish line

Duration: 5-10minutes

What do you need?

  • A straw
  • Pom pom / or round cotton wool ball 
  • A smooth floor surface

What to do:

  1. Have a starting point and a finish point. You may use physical markings to indicate positions.
  2. Demonstrate to your child that he/she needs to blow the pomp om/ball by using their straw crawling from starting point to finish line.
  3. If your child struggles at first, assist them. He /she will be very excited when they experience success.
  4. Remember to praise all efforts.

**Blowing exercises develop oral-motor structures in the mouth which are important for speech production**

Activity 3

Fine motor activity: Balls on toilet paper rolls

Duration: 5-10 minutes

What do you need?

  1. 5 toilet paper rolls
  2. Small plastic balls
  3. A container

What to do:

  1. Demonstrate to your child to put each ball on a toilet paper roll and take it off again
  2. Count aloud when putting balls on and off
  3. Let them do it on their own, you can name each colour ball as they put it on the toilet roll. Have your child repeat the colour name as he/she places it into the container
  4. Show your child to carefully balance the ball on top of the roll as he/she walks. Let him/her try too.
