Activity 1

Hand and foot print keep sake

Duration: 10-15 minutes

What to you need?

  • Paint
  • Hand and foot
  • Craft paper x 2

What to do:

  1. This activity is easier to do outside for cleaning purpose
  2. In a shallow container or tray place some paint in and let your child put both their hands flat into paint and on to craft paper
  3. Keep luke-warm soapy water close by for them to wash their hands off afterwards
  4. Next the put both their feet in the paint in print on craft page 2
  5. Place both art crafts in a sunny room to dry 
  6. This is a lovely keep sake art craft of little feet and hand. Allowing for discussions on unique finger prints and sized hands and feet.
  7. Always allow for free play and water play afterwards. Make sure your child also helps with the cleaning process.

** Cleaning up is an important life skill forming part of your child’s development. It gives him/her a sense of responsibility and it also helps to make life a bit less stressful for you! **

Activity 2 

Mathematics: family member counting

Duration: 5 – 10 minutes

What to you need?

  • Family picture (preferably with more than two members on it)

What to do:

  1. Look at the picture with your child and name all the family members (Have him/her do it independently as this an easy task by now) Ask your child to count the people on the picture by touch counting out loud. Then count the family members together out loud.
  2. Next ask questions about the colour of the members clothing; whether they are male of female (a girl or a boy); an adult or a child; who is bigger/smaller; oldest/youngest?
  3. You may also ask about the surroundings and about their emotions (whether they look happy/sad/excited/scared?) 

Activity 3

Walk the line

Duration: 5 – 10 minutes

What do you need?

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Large floor concrete space

What to do:

  1. *Caregiver is to draw different types of lines and patterns onto the concrete using chalk.
  2. Examples include: Straight lines, a zig-zag line and curvy line
  3. Demonstrate to them how to walk and guide them the first around
  4. Now let them do it by themselves 
  5. Next have your child jump (using two feet) then hop (on one leg) along the length of the lines and patterns.
  6. Discuss the various lines and have your child try and copy them by drawing his/her own lines against a wall/floor surface (that can easily be washed off) with the chalk 
  7. For extra fun, have your child wash it off with a cloth/sponge and water afterwards.
