Activity 1
Creative art constructing a tree
Duration: 10-15 minutes
What do you need?
- Empty toilet roll holder
- Green paper for leaves
- Red paint
What to do:
- Caregiver cuts out a big circle out of green paper * Prepared beforehand
- Instruct your child to finger paint 10 red apples onto the green circle (assist your child by counting out loud as he./she paints the ten apples)
- Caregiver then cuts two small slits into toilet paper holder so that leaves (green paper) can slide into it
Activity 2
Mathematics: more or less
What do you need?
- 2 bowls
- 1 container
- 20 bottle tops or anything to use as counters
What to do:
- Caregiver assists learner with object counting bottle tops: firstly 1-10 (remember to facilitate touch counting)
- Now assist your child to place 5 bottle tops in the first bowl and two in the second bowl.
- Next, have your child count the first bowl and tell you how many there are.
- Then proceed to count the second bowl. Ask your child which bowl he/she thinks has more and which one has less.
- Continue the activity by adding more and taking items out of the bowls. Touch counting each time.
- Praise your child’s efforts.
Activity 3
Physical ball activity
Duration 5 – 10 minutes
What do you need?
- Small plastic balls/rolled up pairs of socks
- Washing basket
What to do:
- Place a washing basket a good distance from your child (at least 1 meter apart)
- Instruct your child to aim and throw the ball in to the basket
- Be aware not to frustrate your child by setting unrealistic distance challenges
- Ensure experiences of success are also achieved
- You may group/sort according to colour if you have enough assortment of different coloured balls.
