Course 1

Dear Parent/Caregiver

Today you will be introducing the theme to your child. To do this effectively you need to provide him/her with some concrete objects to assist with grasping of the concepts. For this the following is recommended:

  • Gather actual items and products used for personal hygiene example toothbrush, tooth paste, dental floss, soap, face cloth, body was, shampoo, hair brush, water in a basin etc.
  • Gather pictures about personal hygiene or use the picture below provided, to get your child interested and engaged in the topic.
  • Show and engage in a conversation with your child about the importance of keeping clean.

Use the following questions to start the discussion:

  • Why do you need to wash hands?
  • When do we need to wash hands?
  • Why is it necessary to wash?
  • What should I do when I cough or sneeze? Why?

Activity 1

Creative Art Activity: Making a coughing Kate

Duration: 20-30 minutes

What do I need?

  • 1 Styrofoam cup
  • Yellow, black or brown paper- (pre- traced small rectangular strips)
  • Scissors
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Permanent marker
  • White paper – pre traced small hands
  • Blue paper – (two pre traced rectangular strips)
  • Glue/glue-stick

What to do:

  1. Firstly explain to your child that he/she will be making coughing Kate character out of a foam cup
  2. Have your child cuts out the pre-traced rectangular strips out of the colour paper as well as the pre-traced small hands.
  3. Ask your child to turn the cup upside down and draws a face onto the cup using the marker (Parents please tell your child beforehand that Kate’s mouth must be drawn open as if she is coughing)
  4. Show your child how to fold the blue rectangular strips to create the crinkle arm effect (see image inserted picture)
  5. He/ she then glues all the hair (small strips of colour paper), eyes, arms and hands in place.
  6. Finally have your child bring one of the arms up to create a bend in the elbow to demonstrate coughing into a bended elbow.

*this craft is a fun way to show children that covering their faces when they cough, or sneeze is an easy way to prevent the spread of germs. If they use their hands and not their elbows, make sure they know that they should wash their hands or use sanitizer before touching anything else.

Activity 2

Art and Language- Painting the Letter‘d’

Duration: 15-20 minutes

What do I need?

  • A4 page with a pre-traced broken lines d written on it in lower case (*Parent to prepare before-hand)
  • Paint (optional)
  • Picture of an object that starts with the letter ‘d’ (example: duck, dog, door, doll etc.) *Learner can source this from magazine/newspaper themselves too)
  • Paintbrush (optional)
  • Glue stick

What must I do?

  1. Firstly, parents are to introduce the letter d to learner by naming the sound and placing your finger on the broken d. (Remember to use the phonic sound and not the alphabet letter name- d and not dee.
  2. Next, pay special attention to giving your child the correct visual reference in relation to the actual letter formation and how to write the letter. Say: It is like planning drums with a stick. First comes the drums and then the stick. (Starting like a curly c letter, going all round, up, up and all the way down.)
  3. Have the learner practice the formation using his/her finger at first and then proceed to complete the letter using the paint brush and paint or by simply finger painting the letter. Allow it to dry in a sunny area
  4. When the painting is dry, have the learner picture of the object starting with the letter d on the page with the painted letter d.

**Learning to form letters correctly forms a big part of efficient handwriting.

Activity 3

Physical Activity: Balancing on pillows

Duration: 10-15 minutes

What do I need?

  • Pillows (as many as can be sourced within the home)

What must I do?

  1. Have your child pack the pillows in a straight line at first and then later into the letter d formation.
  2. Ask your child to walks from one pillow to another till the end
  3. This might sound easy, but their balance will be challenged
